Dialysis

Dialysis is an extracorporeal blood cleansing procedure that is used for renal failure. Intermittent hemodialysis is the most common method that is used as renal replacement therapy for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The treatment is normally carried out three times a week and on average lasts four hours. In addition, there is also acute dialysis with which acute renal failure is treated. Acute renal failure is the sudden loss of renal function. Patients who are treated in an intensive care unit are often affected, e.g. as a consequence of a multi-organ failure, states of shock or severe blood losses.
